Kalbarri artist makes familiar trek north

South Hedland welcomed a regular visitor when talented artist Dougie Ryder rolled into town to display his art work last week.

Ryder, who hails from Kalbarri, makes the yearly trek from his hometown to Hedland to sell his pieces.

“My inspiration for the pieces is the Dreamtime stories from the different tribes and mixed cultures around Kalbarri,” Ryder, who is of the Nunda tribe, said.

“They’re also mixed with contemporary art and include reptiles such as bluetongue lizards and the black-headed snake.”

Ryder said he had made the trip to Hedland for around 20 years and enjoyed catching up with old friends and family.

Ryder’s pieces were created by using water acrylics, and his dazzling array of colours made for some eye-catching and interesting works.

Despite this, when the North West Telegraph caught up with Ryder on Friday, he had only sold one piece despite plenty of interest from passersby.

“I’m here until Thursday or so (so) hopefully I get a few more buyers before then,” he said
