Port Hedland confident of semi-final grunt

Port Hedland United Football Club had a solid training session on Sunday in preparation for this weekend's semifinal match against the Karratha Snow Whites.

The training session focused on ball movement and accurately heading the ball.

Club vice-president Paul Richardson said their strategy going into the finals was using the flanks, crossing the ball effectively and using defence, which has been the team's highlight this season.

President Mike Sheridan said the other sides had been surprised with how organised Port Hedland were.

"We've got a lot more grunt behind us than the Karratha sides and we're a lot more organised," he said.

"We've played every side from Karratha and they've not got any surprises for us.

"If we can get our best players fit and we turn up organised, we've got no doubt that we'll win that game."

Port Hedland UFC is under good guidance with coach Peter Ahlers having previously played premiers football in South Africa.

Secretary Jay Grumisch said the team had taken confidence from a convincing victory over the Karratha Snow Whites in Port Hedland recently.

Grumisch said the team was travelling well, getting a full side every time along with supporters.

"Quite honestly, we can't be more happy," he said.

"Considering we haven't lost, we have to probably consider ourselves favourites to take it out."

Grumisch said going forward the club has had numbers come down intermittently and is hoping to have two teams next year - an A and a B-squad.

Port Hedland United will play Karratha Snow Whites on Sunday at 3pm on Tambrey Oval in Karratha.
