Reptiles rule: Flatbacks crack open Mudcrabs

Hedland’s Flatback Turtles AFL masters team came out of their shells this month to defeat rivals the Karratha Mudcrabs in a surprisingly energetic and skilful display of over-35s footy.

The Turtles laid their flippers on the winner’s trophy after outlasting the Mudcrabs over four quarters of hard footy at Port Hedland’s Colin Matheson oval.

Bolstered by a host of new faces, the Turtles used their large squad to regularly interchange players and stretch the fitness of the travelling Mudcrabs, who had limited reserves.

While masters footy focuses as much on the social beer after the game as the action on the field, the Turtles celebrated long and hard after the win having being crushed by their crustacean opponents in last year’s games.

The Mudcrabs will be keen to avenge the loss when the two teams play a rematch in Karratha later this year.

The Flatbacks now get set to play against a visiting Broome masters side next month as well as an international rules clash against Port Hedland’s Gaelic footy side, the Hedland Gaels.

The Turtles train Mondays at Port Hedland’s Colin Matheson oval and are looking to start a second night in South Hedland.

All are welcome to come along, including those with dodgy hamstrings, crook backs and no skills.
